My World#8 Centennial Monument of Peace and Unity

This is my entry for:

This is the Centennial Monument of Peace and Unity located at San Pedro St., Davao City. It was installed to commemorate the unity and cooperation among indigenous tribes, the early settlers of our city. The monument is strategically located between San Pedro Cathedral and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (City Council) Building. Nowadays, the city is a melting pot of different peoples from all over the world. A lot of stores here are owned by Taiwanese, Korean and Chinese nationals and retirees from Europe and USA are starting to increase in numbers while others have married some locals. Check here to see more of the world.

Terracotta Warriors of China

My China trip last December 2008 was not my first time in China. It was actually the third time I got there. The first time was in Shenzhen, China which was the nearest city from Hongkong. We only stayed for a day to visit the Windows of the World. However, the second trip to China was so far the most extended trip I did with my friends.

We visited four cities that included Shenzhen, Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. Each city has their own distinct personality and their own must-see places but one thing is common among them, all of their airports are quite huge and modern. I must say, more modern than a lot of airports I have seen in America.

All four cities have their own tourist magnets like for Shenzhen, they have the Windows of the World and Splendid China. Beijing has the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Summer Palace.
Shanghai has the Yuyuan Garden, Nanjing Road, the Bund. Xian has the Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China.

Xian’s Terracotta Army has warriors, archers, chariots, horses, musicians, acrobats and strongmen. First discovered sometime in 1974 in the outer suburbs of Xian, Shaanxi Province. The controversial Emperor Qin Shi Huang who was also the same emperor who initiated the building of the Great Wall of China built it.

According to our tourist guide, the Terracotta army is estimated to have 8000 warriors each with distinct facial features. Here are some pictures we took:

Terracotta warriors are widely imitated everywhere in the world and here's a pic of some of them.

My World#8 Huangpu River, Shanghai, China

Along with my friends, I went on a vacation in Shanghai China last December 2008. We stayed for three days, did a lot of walking, sightseeing and picture taking even if the cold would get too much for us.

Here are some of the pictures we took:

This is the Huangpu River, flanked by the Bund (Shanghai’s old financial district) on one side and Pudong (Shanghai’s new financial district) on the other side.

The Bund as can be seen from Pudong during the night.

Huangpu Park on the left side as can be seen during the night.

One of the more popular ways to cross Huangpu River from one side to the other is the underwater train which features high-tech sight and sound shows.

This is my entry for:

Dolphins!!

The first time I have seen dolphins in the wild I was ecstatic. I was vacationing in Bohol with a friend and one of the must-do things I have in mind was to see the dolphins of Bohol Sea. Never mind if I have to get up early as long as I get to see them, throw in a whale or two and I would be delirious. They did not disappoint even if the whales were not there. We got late because our hired tricycle driver came up late but still, we got to see some dolphins. They even seem to play hide and seek with us, disappearing suddenly and then suddenly jumping up in the air, flipping in pairs or groups. I was so in heaven, I could not operate my camera properly. That’s my one big regret.

Now, imagine seeing those dolphins like they were in a stampede at sea!! I have seen this video in photobucket and it was just so amazing I need to share it here. Look!!

Funny..I was thinking, if I was the guy on the boat, I would’ve flipped overboard to the waters and might have gotten really “stampeded” on by those dolphins.

My World#7 Magsaysay Park

This is my entry for:

Magsaysay Park is located at the northern end of Magsaysay Ave., of our city. It is named after the 7th President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay.

The park is a popular place for the locals especially on late afternoons and weekends when families, couples or group of friends just sit around for picnics. In the mornings, the park has the morning exercisers doing aerobics, taichi, jogging, walking and biking. After its rehabilitation several years ago, several commercial establishments were allowed to operate inside the park’s premises, however, these establishments closed down or transferred after the park started implementing the 7pm closing time.

My early memories of the park go back when I was just in grade school. My parents used to take us there often when the sun was just starting to rise. My father would do his early morning jog around the park while me and my brother played around as my mother kept an eye on us. After his morning exercise, we would eat the packed breakfast my parents brought before we go home.

The park is also popular for the durian fruit stores lining up just outside its gates. It is also fronting one of the two of the newly installed Chinese arches in the area.

More worlds here...

My World#6 Ninoy Aquino International Airport 3

It was my first time to get through Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (popularly called NAIA 3) last December 2008. The said airport’s opening was put on hold for a long while due to some controversies. It was eventually opened last year initially handling the Cebu Pacific Airlines domestic and international flights.

The place is actually bigger than NAIA 1 and NAIA 2 airports. I got fascinated with their Christmas lantern decorations. They are quite big and colorful. Here’re some of the pictures I took:
